New Poultry Testing Expansion Targets Faster Disease Detection

New Poultry Testing Expansion Targets Faster Disease Detection

By Jamie Martin

Alveo Technologies and Royal GD are expanding their partnership to offer more rapid molecular tests for poultry diseases. This move builds on their successful avian influenza test and aims to help farmers make faster, more informed decisions in the field.

Alveo’s testing platform, called IntelliSense™, uses electrical sensing to detect disease-causing DNA or RNA in a small, reusable, handheld device. It provides results in under an hour through a mobile app—no need to send samples to a lab and wait days or weeks.

Alveo and Royal GD will now develop two new testing panels. One will identify notifiable diseases, and the other will focus on respiratory conditions in poultry. These diseases often show similar symptoms, so quick and accurate testing is key to identifying the correct illness.

Diseases like bird flu and Newcastle disease can spread fast and destroy entire flocks. Quick detection can prevent big losses and protect animal health. Current testing methods are slow and rely on centralized labs. The new system allows real-time, on-site results that help with quick actions such as treatment, isolation, or vaccination.

With rising disease threats due to climate change and global trade, having mobile, easy-to-use, and accurate tools is more important than ever. This partnership helps meet that need and offers farmers new ways to manage risks and keep poultry flocks safe and productive.
