Illinois Corn Leaders Advocate for Farmers in Washington DC

Illinois Corn Leaders Advocate for Farmers in Washington DC

By Andi Anderson

Illinois corn farmers traveled to Washington, D.C. this July to advocate for farming communities and highlight key policy issues.

The Illinois Corn Growers Association (ICGA) and Illinois Corn Marketing Board (ICMB) joined other state leaders at the National Corn Growers Association’s Corn Congress. Together, they met with lawmakers to discuss important agricultural concerns.

During their visit, Illinois corn leaders, along with 25 Illinois FFA District Section Presidents, met with 17 members of Congress and both Illinois Senators. These meetings gave lawmakers a direct understanding of how federal policies impact farmers in Illinois.

The primary focus was on protecting family farms as they face declining commodity prices and rising input costs. Farmers shared concerns over reduced farm incomes, market instability, and policy uncertainty, urging Congress to support policies that increase both domestic and export demand for corn.

Conservation policies were another major topic. Illinois farmers promoted flexible, voluntary conservation programs that support profitable and productive farming. They highlighted the need for policies that help overcome barriers to conservation adoption and link conservation with crop insurance programs.

On trade, farmers asked Congress to support a positive trade agenda that allows farmers access to vital inputs and strengthens market opportunities worldwide.

Renewable fuels remain a key issue. With corn yields rising and ethanol demand falling, farmers pushed for strong support of renewable fuel initiatives. Their requests included backing high-octane fuel legislation, ensuring year-round sales of E15, and providing incentives for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Finally, the farmers advocated for the maintenance and funding of the nation's lock and dam infrastructure. They called for the enactment of FY26 Energy and Water Appropriations and opposed any tolls or fees on waterway users.

IL Corn continues its advocacy efforts, encouraging members to participate through political action committees and grassroots campaigns to protect the future of agriculture.
