Illinois Chicken Bill Supports Small Poultry Farmers Growth

Illinois Chicken Bill Supports Small Poultry Farmers Growth

By Andi Anderson

A new bill in Illinois, often called the “chicken bill,” aims to support small poultry farmers by increasing their processing limit from 5,000 to 7,500 birds per year. It removes some older restrictions, making it easier for these farmers to sell their poultry beyond their farms.

Under this new rule, farmers no longer need to rely solely on USDA-approved processing facilities. Instead, those under the 7,500-bird limit can process poultry on their farms without state or federal inspections. They can now sell their products at farmers markets, roadside stands, and even make home deliveries.

Senator Sally Turner, one of the bill’s sponsors, said the change is about connecting farmers with communities. Representative Charlie Meier, also a farmer, highlighted how this bill helps consumers access fresh, local poultry and meet the farmers behind their food.

The bill was passed unanimously by both the Illinois House and Senate. Public health officials initially raised concerns, but those were addressed by adding strict packaging and safety requirements. Poultry must now be stored at safe temperatures, sealed in leak-proof containers, and labeled clearly with the farm name, product details, and a note about exemption from inspections.

Advocates like Ed Dubrick from the Illinois Stewardship Alliance say the change gives farmers better opportunities. Many farmers, like Anna Morrell from The Little Farm at Weldon Springs, see this as a way to scale up without high costs or long trips to distant processors.

Illinois now joins other states in supporting local poultry production through more flexible laws. The bill represents teamwork between farmers, health departments, and lawmakers, aiming to strengthen rural communities and provide fresh, local food.

If signed by the governor, the bill will bring new hope for small farm families and improve access to fresh poultry across Illinois.
