Illinois agriculture workers secure big wins in union contract

By Andi Anderson

Maintenance workers at the Illinois Agriculture Association recently achieved significant victories in their latest union contract negotiations.

With new management and a fresh crew, workers saw an opportunity to demand better conditions and wages, leading to a determined and prolonged negotiation process.

For the first time in many years, workers actively engaged in a fight for their rights. The contract negotiations, which typically lasted only a few days, extended over several months this time.

Their persistent efforts and unity paid off, resulting in a newly ratified contract that includes substantial pay increases.

The new contract ensures that workers will receive pay raises ranging from 98 cents to $2 per hour, bringing competitive wages to the organization.

These increases are expected to significantly improve the quality of life for the workers and their families, providing them with better financial stability and prospects for the future.

A worker expressed their satisfaction, saying, “This time around, we wanted to reestablish boundaries. We stepped up and won major pay increases. Without union representation, we wouldn’t have won as much as we did.

It helped get us in a better position for the future. Thank you to our rep Ricky Baldwin and SEIU Local 73.”

The success of the contract negotiations highlights the importance of union representation in advocating for workers' rights and securing better working conditions.

The workers' determination and collective effort have set a precedent for future negotiations, ensuring that their voices are heard and their needs are met.

Overall, the new union contract marks a significant achievement for the Illinois Agriculture Association workers. It not only provides immediate financial benefits but also strengthens their position for future negotiations.

The successful outcome demonstrates the power of unity and collective bargaining in achieving fair and equitable conditions for workers.

As the workers celebrate their hard-earned victory, they remain committed to maintaining their momentum and continuing to advocate for their rights.

The new contract serves as a testament to their resilience and determination, paving the way for a brighter and more secure future for all members of the Illinois Agriculture Association.
