The One Big Beautiful Bill delivered substantial support to U.S. agriculture with $66 billion allocated to farm programs, including funding to modernize key farm safety net programs. This investment extends commodity support and raises statutory reference prices for major covered crops. Despite these wins, more is required.
Brian Glenn, Director of Government Affairs for the American Farm Bureau Federation, emphasized the importance of continuing to improve risk management systems. “About $60 billion was allocated to modernizing farm safety net programs, including extending commodity programs through 2031 and enhancing premium support for new farmers,” he explained.
However, Glenn noted that several vital programs still need updating through the next farm bill. Reauthorization and funding for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) remain pressing issues. Furthermore, support for rural broadband expansion and agricultural research is needed to ensure continued rural development and innovation.
Chairman GT Thompson is leading the effort to draft legislation that will address these gaps. Hearings are ongoing in both the House and Senate Agriculture Committees, with the goal of moving the bill forward in the fall.
Farmers and ranchers eagerly await the finalization of the next farm bill, which will provide the necessary updates to continue advancing U.S. agricultural policies.
