AI Powered Satellites Bring New Insights to Farming

By Jamie Martin

Agriculture may soon benefit from even more detailed crop monitoring thanks to a partnership between Metaspectral and Planet.

The companies are combining hyperspectral satellite observations with artificial intelligence to create a powerful tool for analyzing crops, vegetation, and environmental conditions from space.

Planet's Tanager™ satellites collect highly detailed hyperspectral imagery that captures information beyond what traditional satellite systems can provide. Metaspectral's Clarity platform then processes the data, delivering science-based insights that can be used for real-world decision-making.

The technology is designed to detect subtle changes in crops and soil that may indicate developing problems. These signals can often be identified before visible symptoms appear, allowing farmers and land managers to respond more quickly.

Clarity uses AI-driven analysis to convert complex imagery into understandable reports and recommendations. The platform highlights important findings, identifies areas that may need attention, and supports validation through evidence-based outputs.

“Tanager gives organizations access to a new level of spectral information from orbit,” said Francis Doumet, CEO of Metaspectral. “Clarity turns that information into intelligence they can trust. Our partnership with Planet is focused on deriving intelligence from hyperspectral analysis-ready data and transforming it into science-based evidence for high-confidence, high-consequence decisions.”

The system can be used for crop monitoring, irrigation planning, field inspections, environmental assessments, and long-term resource management. Its ability to identify biochemical and material differences offers advantages over conventional multispectral imaging technologies.

In addition to serving the agriculture sector, Metaspectral's technology supports applications in forestry, mining, aerospace, defense, manufacturing, and environmental monitoring. The company has also earned recognition through its work with NASA and its patented AI technologies.

“Tanager expands the scope of what organizations can monitor from orbit by capturing rich hyperspectral observations across broad wavelength ranges,” said Linds Panther, Director of Strategic Partnerships at Planet. “Metaspectral’s Clarity platform translates those observations into spectral intelligence, supporting applications where monitoring, change detection, and decision confidence are critical.”

By combining advanced satellite observations with artificial intelligence, the partnership aims to improve the way organizations understand and respond to changes on Earth.
