Edmison Acres, owned by Chad and Lindsey Edmison, welcomed visitors to its Johnsonville farm as part of the Illinois Extension Summer Twilight Series. The family-run operation combines row crop production with a growing Highland cattle enterprise.
Started in 2020, the Highland cattle herd has expanded to around 25 animals, including both purebred and crossbred cattle. During the tour, visitors learned about regenerative grazing practices, pasture management, and the unique traits of Highland cattle compared to conventional beef breeds.
The farm serves multiple markets, including breeding stock, beef production, and occasional pet sales. However, the Edmisons primarily focus on raising quality breeding animals with good temperaments. According to Lindsey Edmison, word-of-mouth referrals and community connections have been effective tools for marketing their cattle.
The event demonstrated how small farms can find success in niche agricultural markets while providing valuable learning opportunities for other producers. Through the Summer Twilight Series, attendees gained insights into alternative livestock enterprises, farm management practices, and specialty marketing strategies.
The series continues this summer with upcoming tours of Pink Tiger Farm and Friendly Farms.
