The Illinois State Fair will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Route 66 by naming the famous highway the honorary Grand Marshal of the 2026 Illinois State Fair Twilight Parade. To mark this special occasion, classic vehicles will lead the parade, recognizing the rich history and lasting influence of the historic route.
Established in 1926, Route 66 began in downtown Chicago and became one of America's most recognized highways. Over the past century, it has connected communities, encouraged travel, and become a symbol of freedom, adventure, and exploration. The route has played a major role in shaping Illinois' identity and continues to attract visitors from around the world.
Route 66 has influenced American culture in many ways. It has inspired books, songs, television programs, and films that celebrate the spirit of the open road. The highway was famously described as the "Mother Road" in John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. It also inspired Bobby Troup's well-known song "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66," while Disney-Pixar's Cars introduced its charm to a new generation. Historic diners, neon signs, roadside attractions, and welcoming small towns remain important parts of the Route 66 experience.
Visitors to the Illinois State Fairgrounds can learn more about this history through the Route 66 Experience, a self-guided educational exhibit located near Gate 2. The exhibit highlights the people, places, and stories that made the highway famous.
Highlighting the significance of the recognition, Jerry Costello II, Director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture, said, "Illinois is the birthplace of this iconic highway and ours is the only fairgrounds in the nation to sit on Route 66, making it the perfect honorary Grand Marshal for this year's Illinois State Fair Twilight Parade. Just like Route 66 has connected communities and created lifelong memories, this parade invites everyone to take part in a tradition that celebrates what makes Illinois special."
The Twilight Parade will begin in Lincoln Park and travel through Sangamon Avenue before entering the fairgrounds. Participants will march along several key routes before exiting the grounds, giving visitors a chance to enjoy the celebration.
Rebecca Clark, Illinois State Fair Manager, also encouraged participation, stating, "We invite fairgoers from across Illinois and beyond to join us in celebrating 100 years of Route 66 during the Illinois State Fair. From the Twilight Parade to Route 66 exhibits, entertainment and special events, we're looking forward to welcoming visitors for a celebration that honors our state's history."
In addition to parade activities, visitors can explore Route 66-themed exhibits and special events, making the centennial celebration a memorable part of the 2026 Illinois State Fair.
