Erbacres Holsteins of Lanark, Illinois, has been named the recipient of the 2026 Robert “Whitey” McKown Master Breeder Award. The award recognizes dairy farms that demonstrate excellence in genetics, milk production, longevity, and positive influence on the Holstein breed.
The farm was established in 1957 by Kenneth Erbsen and Pauline Erbsen with a small herd of grade Holsteins. Over time, the herd transitioned to registered Holsteins, creating the well-known Erbacres prefix. The family-operated farm has remained dedicated to dairy farming and cattle improvement for nearly seven decades.
Kenneth and Pauline raised six children who shared a strong commitment to the family farm and the Holstein breed. Following Kenneth’s passing in 1994, Kevin Erbsen took over herd management and breeding decisions, working alongside his mother until her passing in 2021. Today, the next generation, including Payton Erbsen, Delana Erbsen, and Wendy Erbsen, plays an important role in farm operations.
The family farms 700 acres and raises around 100 registered Holsteins. Despite its modest size, the herd has achieved remarkable success. Erbacres has bred 245 Excellent cows, 21 Gold Medal Dams, and 25 Dams of Merit. The herd has also received the Progressive Breeders Registry Award for 28 years.
Erbacres Holsteins has earned significant recognition in cattle shows. The family has participated in its district Holstein show for 59 years and has produced numerous champions at state and regional events. The farm has exhibited 25 Illinois Futurity winners, including the 2026 winner, Erbacres Tatoo Cleo EX-93.
One of the farm’s most celebrated cows is Erbacres Snapple Shakira-ET RC, scored EX-97 4E 10. Shakira was named Supreme Champion at World Dairy Expo in 2021 and 2023 and also earned Supreme Champion honors at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in 2023. Several of her offspring continue to achieve success in the show ring and breeding industry.
The Erbsen family has also been actively involved in dairy organizations, youth programs, and community leadership. Their long-standing commitment to agriculture, education, and Holstein breeding reflects the values recognized by the McKown Master Breeder Award. Their achievements continue to inspire dairy producers and strengthen the future of the Holstein industry.
