Illinois Extension welcomed farmers, agricultural professionals, and community members to its annual Agronomy Field Day at the Ewing Demonstration Center in southern Illinois. The event provided participants with an opportunity to learn about the latest agricultural research and management practices that can support successful farming operations.
The Ewing Demonstration Center has been an important agricultural research site since 1910. Over the years, it has served growers by conducting studies on major crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat, sorghum, and cover crops.
The center is also known for its long-running no-till research and demonstration plots, which have been in place for more than 50 years. These trials help provide information that reflects real farming conditions in southern Illinois.
During the field day, attendees traveled to different research stations across the demonstration grounds. At each location, university educators and researchers shared valuable findings and recommendations designed to improve farm productivity and sustainability.
Boris Camiletti, University of Illinois Assistant Professor in Crop Sciences, discussed current crop disease concerns and explained how fungicide applications can influence farm profitability. His presentation helped growers better understand disease management and return on investment.
John Jones, University of Illinois Assistant Professor of Agronomy and Extension Specialist in Soil Fertility, focused on soil nutrient management. He highlighted how local research data can support more effective phosphorus and potassium decisions, helping farmers maximize crop performance while managing input costs.
Connor Sible, University of Illinois Research Assistant Professor, presented information on biological products and biostimulants used in row crops. He discussed current knowledge in the field and explored future opportunities for these emerging agricultural technologies.
Nathan Johanning and Dane Hunter of the Commercial Agriculture Team shared insights on cover crop systems and management strategies. Their presentation emphasized practices that can improve soil health, reduce erosion, and support long-term farm sustainability.
The event offered a practical learning experience that connected scientific research with real-world farming needs. Participants gained valuable information that can be applied directly to their operations. In addition to educational presentations, attendees received a complimentary lunch and had opportunities to interact with agricultural experts and fellow growers.
Certified Crop Advisor CEUs were also available, making the event beneficial for professional development. Through research-based education and field demonstrations, the Agronomy Field Day continued its mission of supporting informed decision-making and advancing agricultural success across the region.
