Illinois continues to lead the nation in pumpkin production, making it an important hub for growers, researchers, and agricultural businesses.
To support knowledge sharing and industry growth, Illinois Extension will host Pumpkin Field Day on September 3, 2026, at Eckert’s Orchard in Belleville.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. and is designed for commercial growers, industry professionals, and anyone interested in learning more about pumpkin farming.
Participants will have the opportunity to explore current research, production practices, and new developments in the pumpkin industry.
Several educational activities are planned throughout the day. Visitors can take part in research trial tours, attend presentations from university specialists and Extension educators, review pumpkin variety trials, and learn about the latest commercial pumpkin production updates. The event will also provide opportunities to connect with growers and agricultural industry vendors.
Illinois has earned national recognition for pumpkin production. In 2024, the state harvested more than 485 million pounds of pumpkins and maintained its position as the top state for both pumpkin production and processing.
This strong industry presence makes Illinois an ideal location for educational events focused on pumpkin farming.
Commercial Agriculture Specialist Nathan Johanning has organized Pumpkin Field Day in the region since 2014. The event showcases more than 75 pumpkin varieties, including gourds, pie pumpkins, jack-o’-lantern pumpkins, specialty varieties, and newly released selections.
The wide range of displays allows attendees to compare different pumpkins and learn about their commercial potential.
Highlighting the value of the event, Commercial Agriculture Specialist Nathan Johanning said, “Field day allows growers to ask questions, share what they see at home, and build networks with Extension, fellow growers, industry vendors, and beyond.”
The event will be held outdoors and will proceed rain or shine. Attendance is free, although advance registration is required for those who wish to receive lunch. The field day also offers a platform for industry vendors and sponsors to connect with the pumpkin-growing community.
By bringing together research experts, growers, and industry representatives, Pumpkin Field Day aims to strengthen knowledge, encourage collaboration, and support the continued success of Illinois’ pumpkin industry.
