The Illinois Corn Growers Association (ICGA) is continuing its efforts to support lower fertilizer costs for farmers by encouraging policies that improve competition and increase fertilizer availability in the marketplace.
On June 29, President Trump suspended countervailing duties on phosphate fertilizer imports from Morocco for eight months after declaring a national emergency related to fertilizer supplies for American farmers. The decision was made to improve fertilizer availability, create more competition among suppliers, and help reduce costs for farmers who rely on these products for crop production.
Phosphate fertilizer plays an important role in crop growth and productivity. Any increase in fertilizer prices can significantly affect farm operating expenses. Because of this, many agricultural organizations are closely watching policies that influence fertilizer supply and pricing.
Recently, the U.S. Department of Commerce issued a preliminary recommendation supporting the continuation of countervailing duties on phosphate fertilizer imports from Morocco as part of an ongoing sunset review. The public comment period is currently open, and the department is expected to make a final decision within the next eight months.
