Summer cookout price stays elevated

Summer cookout price stays elevated

By Jamie Martin

The American Farm Bureau’s annual cookout survey shows the cost to host a summer cookout for 10 people in the US stands at $70.92. This is 30 cents lower than last year but remains one of the highest totals recorded since the survey began in 2013.

Proteins continue to drive price increases. The cost of ground beef rose 4.4% to $13.33 for two pounds due to reduced cattle supply. Chicken breasts and eggs also remain expensive, though lower than their earlier 2025 peak following the recovery from avian influenza.

In contrast, pork chops saw a national price drop of 8.8%, now averaging $14.13 for three pounds. However, these savings are outweighed by higher prices in other protein categories.

“Wisconsinites can expect to spend a bit more this Fourth of July holiday,” said WFBF Senior Director of Public Relations Cassie Sonnentag. “These prices are a reflection of inflation and lower availability of certain food items.”

Shopping behaviour is evolving. A majority of Americans now use digital tools like grocery apps, online ordering, and budgeting lists. Nearly 12% rely almost entirely on online services.

Consumers are encouraged to seek savings by shopping in season, identifying local brands, and purchasing items on sale. These habits can help reduce overall spending without compromising on quality.

The $70.92 figure reflects ongoing pressure from inflation and supply chain challenges, with a slight decline offering only modest relief. Farm Bureau continues to track these changes through its Marketbasket series.
