Illinois Fields Crowned Great Pumpkin State Leader

Illinois Fields Crowned Great Pumpkin State Leader

By Andi Anderson

Illinois proudly holds the title of the nation’s top pumpkin producer, harvesting more pumpkins than the next five states combined.

This achievement stems from a unique combination of fertile soil, favorable climate, and hardworking farmers who have perfected pumpkin cultivation.

Mac Condill, owner of The Great Pumpkin Patch in Arthur, Illinois, has spent more than three decades growing pumpkins. He recalls planting the family’s first one-acre crop by hand, a nine-hour effort that marked the start of a thriving business.

Over the years, Condill’s farm has grown hundreds of pumpkin varieties, demonstrating both the versatility of the crop and the dedication of Illinois farmers.

The state’s success is rooted in its ideal conditions for cucurbits, the plant family that includes pumpkins, squash, and gourds. These crops prefer hot, dry weather and Illinois consistently delivers.

Even during widespread droughts, the region maintains a strong pumpkin harvest, thanks to its climate and nutrient-rich soil. Essential micronutrients such as boron and molybdenum contribute to the pumpkins’ sturdy structure, bright color, and excellent market quality, setting them apart from crops in neighboring states.

Pumpkin farming gained momentum in the mid-1980s when many family farms faced financial challenges in traditional corn and soybean production.

Diversification led farmers to explore specialty crops like pumpkins, which have since become a vital part of Illinois agriculture. Today, the state supplies a majority of the country’s pumpkins, supporting agritourism, local markets, and national distribution.

From small farm stands to large-scale operations, Illinois pumpkin growers embody innovation and resilience. Their efforts ensure that when autumn arrives, pumpkins of all shapes and sizes—from decorative gourds to those destined for pies—are ready to fill homes and markets nationwide, firmly establishing Illinois as the Great Pumpkin State.
