Illinois Pork Group Empowers Livestock Learners

Illinois Pork Group Empowers Livestock Learners

By Andi Anderson

The Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA) has introduced a new livestock apprenticeship program, officially registered with the U.S. Department of Labor.

Developed with support from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, this program aims to strengthen the state’s pork industry while creating workforce opportunities.

The program prepares career seekers for the role of Swine Animal Care Technician. Apprentices will earn competitive wages that increase as they advance through the program.

In addition, students will receive debt-free education and a livestock certificate from one of five participating community colleges: Illinois Central College in East Peoria, John Wood Community College in Quincy, Kaskaskia College in Centralia, Lake Land Community College in Mattoon, and Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield.

“These five community colleges were chosen because of their strong agriculture programs and representation across the swine production regions of Illinois,” said Jennifer Tirey, IPPA Executive Director. She emphasized that colleges welcomed the opportunity to help increase job creation in the pork industry.

The apprenticeship idea was first proposed by an IPPA board member in early 2025. With assistance from Apprenticeship Illinois, the program was quickly registered and developed with high-quality curriculum tailored to industry needs.

Participating pork producers will partner with apprentices by offsetting tuition costs in exchange for on-farm training. These costs are supported by the Apprenticeship Illinois Tax Credit, which allows employers to receive up to $5,000 per apprentice per year.

Students will complete two years of training, gaining both practical and classroom knowledge before receiving their certificate.

Nate Carlson, State Apprenticeship Mentor, praised the initiative, saying, “Registered Apprenticeship programs are a win-win for Illinois employers and career seekers alike. Empowering employers to train and retain skilled talent is at the core of registered apprenticeship.”

The program encourages students to explore livestock careers while supporting the long-term growth of Illinois pork production. Interested students and producers can learn more by contacting IPPA.
