Seedstock breeders across Illinois are now encouraged to start selecting bulls they plan to consign for the 2026 Illinois Performance Tested (IPT) Bull Sale.
The event, known as the leadoff sale of the annual Illinois Beef Expo, will take place on February 19, 2026, in the Artisans Building at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.
Eligible bulls include those born between January 2024 and March 2025. Nominations must be submitted by December 1, 2025, along with a $100 fee per bull. Complete rules, regulations, and nomination forms are available online at IPTBullSale.com.
Selection for the sale is based on economic selection indexes, determining both qualification and sale order. Each breed will be ranked by its respective indexes: Angus by $Combined ($C), Simmental by All Purpose Index (API) and Terminal Index (TI), and Hereford by Baldy Maternal Index (BMI) or Certified Hereford Beef (CHB).
Bulls must have a calving ease EPD in the top 85th percentile and can be halter-broke or non-halter-broke, provided they demonstrate good disposition.
Consignors may nominate up to eight bulls, with first-time participants limited to four. Bulls will require genomic-enhanced EPDs, achieved through approved genetic testing, ensuring more reliable data for buyers.
Strict health requirements remain in place, including testing for Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD), Johne’s disease certification, trichomoniasis testing for older bulls, and breeding soundness exams performed by veterinarians.
According to sale manager and University of Illinois Extension educator Travis Meteer, genomic data enhances buyer confidence. “We are reducing the risk on these bulls,” he explained. “The bulls selling can be trusted more now than ever to sire true to their values.”
