When Norwegian exchange student Maren Klakegg learned her high school year abroad would take her to Franklin, Illinois instead of California, she did not know what to expect.
What she found was more than a host family — she found a lifelong connection with the Thompson family.
Maren quickly became part of their home, enjoying family meals, small-town traditions, and combine rides with “Grandpa.” These experiences gave her a close look at Illinois farming, where long days, strong values, and a dedication to the land define daily life. “I still call them Mom and Dad,” Maren said. “I visit often — I was back three times last year. I’m not sure they realized they were stuck with me forever, but they are.”
Now an award-winning filmmaker in Norway, Maren continues to share how Illinois agriculture shaped her. “I loved seeing the passion and pride people in the States have for what they do in agriculture,” she said. “It was inspiring and I still talk about it often.”
Her story was recently featured on IL Corn TV, where Illinois farmer and IL Corn Marketing Board Director John Klemm highlighted the importance of farm family connections.
By opening their home, the Thompsons became ambassadors for Illinois agriculture, showing its heart and impact to the world.
At IL Corn TV, sharing such stories helps highlight the pride, passion, and perseverance of Illinois farm families. These narratives remind consumers, neighbors, and international visitors that behind every acre of farmland is a story of legacy and dedication.
