Boost farm success with water management

Boost farm success with water management

By Andi Anderson

Farmers and landowners can enhance their farm’s sustainability and profitability by improving water management practices.

A two-day workshop, "Integrated Water Management for Farmers and Landowners," will be held on Nov. 6 and 7 at the Farm Credit Illinois Regional Office in Mahomet.

Hosted by experts from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Illinois Extension, this workshop will guide attendees in understanding and implementing integrated water management strategies.

The workshop will feature presentations from university researchers, Extension staff, and Natural Resources Conservation Service representatives. They will cover essential topics such as soil drainage, nutrient loss reduction, surface runoff, and erosion control.

Attendees will learn how to identify water management issues in their fields and explore practical solutions that suit their specific locations.

The first day focuses on understanding the basics of integrated water management, recognizing field problems, and improving soil drainage.

The second day shifts towards sustainable production, managing runoff, controlling erosion, and enhancing nutrient management.

The workshop aims to equip participants with the knowledge to make informed decisions and work effectively with contractors to implement water management practices. By improving drainage and nutrient efficiency, farmers can protect their soil, increase crop yields, and ensure long-term farm sustainability.

Registration costs $15 and includes lunch on both days. Participants are encouraged to register before Nov. 1 to secure their spots.
