Abby Coers Builds Ag Career from IL Corn Roots

By Andi Anderson

In 2010, while most students were interning in office cubicles, Abby Coers took a different path—remotely interning for IL Corn, where she began shaping her future in agricultural communications.

Despite not owning a smartphone at the time, she dived into the world of social media, then still in its early stages.

“Back then, no one really knew how to use social media strategically,” Coers shared. “IL Corn gave me the opportunity to learn by doing.”

She focused on blogging and social media strategy, creating a Facebook page called Agriculture Everyday to connect agriculture with the public.

Through this, she discovered that successful social media required more than just photos—it needed thoughtful planning, timing, and messaging.

The internship taught Coers key skills: effective writing, digital professionalism, and the importance of knowing your audience. She also learned to evaluate her communication efforts with analytics—a mindset she carries today.

Fast forward 12 years, Coers now leads all social media efforts at Central Illinois Ag and produces the company’s publication, Live. Work. Grow. Her role blends photography, journalism, design, and storytelling, capturing the voices of farmers and ag businesses.

“I love my job. It is so much fun,” Coers said. But beyond creativity, she remains focused on impact. “At the end of the day, you have to look at the analytics... That analytical mindset started with IL Corn.”

Coers credits her IL Corn internship as the foundation of her success. “Social media has changed so much, but I still use the skills and knowledge I gained from IL Corn.”

Her journey from intern to communications leader highlights the lasting power of early opportunities, self-motivation, and organizations that invest in young talent.
