Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity have selected NewCarbon to receive state funding to develop renewable natural gas (RNG) projects in DuPage County.
This move supports Illinois' efforts to cut emissions, create jobs, and promote sustainability through local clean energy solutions.
The RNG projects will be developed at three wastewater treatment plants in partnership with DuPage County, Glenbard Wastewater Authority, and Wheaton Sanitary District. These facilities are located in or serve Equity Investment Eligible Communities.
The projects will capture methane gas from wastewater treatment, clean and convert it into pipeline-ready renewable natural gas, and inject it into existing pipelines.
This clean energy will be used just like conventional natural gas but will produce fewer emissions. The initiative is part of the state's Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA), which focuses on building a stronger clean energy workforce and supporting historically underserved communities.
NewCarbon’s CEO Omar Khayum expressed pride in the opportunity, emphasizing the importance of starting innovation at the local level. “We’re proving that climate innovation can start locally and scale regionally,” he said, highlighting the benefits of job creation, reduced emissions, and energy resilience.
Local officials have also shown strong support. DuPage County Chief Administrative Officer Nick Kottmeyer said the project aligns with the county’s mission to promote sustainability and workforce development.
Glenbard Wastewater Authority's Matt Streicher called it a forward-thinking solution to reduce emissions, while Wheaton Sanitary District's Matt Larson noted the project will generate revenue and stabilize utility costs.
Through this partnership, DuPage County is taking a big step toward environmental stewardship, proving that community-focused innovation can build a cleaner, more sustainable future for all.
