Virginia Farm Bureau Hosts Tours to Highlight Ag Industry

By Jamie Martin

In 2025, Virginia Farm Bureau hosted a series of farm tours and roundtable meetings to help urban and suburban lawmakers better understand the state's agricultural industry.

Three regional events welcomed 14 legislators, while several additional offices were represented by staff members who work closely with farming issues.

Each tour highlighted a different segment of Virginia agriculture, including livestock, field crops, specialty crops, and agritourism enterprises.

The initiative was designed not only to demonstrate agriculture’s importance to the state's economy and environment but also to build lasting relationships that encourage balanced policy decisions.

Local Farm Bureau volunteers were essential to the program’s success, working alongside staff to coordinate logistics, recruit participating farmers, and provide insights into everyday agricultural challenges.

More than 20 volunteer leaders served as guides and advocates throughout the events.

Post-event surveys showed a strong positive response from lawmakers and their staff. All respondents said they gained a greater appreciation for the experiences of Virginia farmers and a clearer understanding of Farm Bureau priorities.

For nearly four out of five participants, it was their first opportunity to take part in one of the organization's educational farm tours.
