USDA Rural Development in Illinois recently marked National Homeownership Month by highlighting efforts to expand affordable housing opportunities in rural areas. The initiative focuses on helping first-time homebuyers achieve homeownership and improving financial security for families.
The programs aim to make homeownership more accessible by reducing barriers, supporting loan availability, and encouraging long-term economic stability. These efforts are part of a broader mission to strengthen rural communities across the country.
“The Trump Administration and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins are focused on growing first time homeownership, making home borrowing more accessible by cutting barriers, helping families build equity and long-term financial security,” said USDA Rural Development Acting Under Secretary Todd Lindsey. “USDA Rural Development is playing a key role by delivering real solutions for rural communities across the country.”
Homeownership is considered an important step in building wealth and creating a stable future for families. USDA officials emphasized that these programs play a major role in supporting both individuals and rural development.
“Under President Trump’s and Secretary Rollins’ leadership, the U.S. Department of Agriculture fulfills the American Dream of homeownership for families, and a rural revival for communities,” said Ortega. “USDA Rural Development celebrates Homeownership Month throughout June, with homeownership programs, partnerships, innovations, and initiatives.”
To support these goals, USDA offers several housing programs. The Single-Family Housing Guaranteed Loan Program works with private lenders to help families buy homes in rural areas. The Home Repair Loan and Grant Program assists families in making their homes safer and healthier.
Additionally, the Mutual Self-Help Housing Grant Program supports organizations that help build homes through community efforts. The Single-Family Housing Direct Home Loan Program provides direct loans for families to buy or build homes in rural regions.
USDA also collaborates with builders, lenders, and community partners to simplify procedures and increase awareness about available programs. Beyond housing, these initiatives strengthen rural infrastructure and support long-term economic growth, ensuring communities remain strong and self-reliant.
