Plano teen snags first place at state fair

By Andi Anderson

Plano teenager Adan Silva has captured the beauty of planting through the lens of his camera, earning him first place in the 15-18 age bracket of the state treasurer’s Cream of the Crop photo contest.

Silva’s winning photograph, titled “The Beauty in Planting,” features one of the plants from his family’s backyard garden, highlighting the simple yet profound beauty of agriculture.

The Cream of the Crop photo contest is an annual event that celebrates the rich agricultural heritage of Illinois, encouraging young photographers to showcase the state’s farming culture.

Silva’s photograph, along with other winning entries, is currently on display at the Illinois State Fair, where visitors can view these works in the treasurer’s tent. The fair, a long-standing tradition in Illinois, runs through August 18 and offers a variety of agricultural exhibits, competitions, and entertainment.

Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs, who oversees the photo contest, invited the first-place winners to a special reception held on August 9, during Agriculture Day at the fair.

This event provided an opportunity for the winners to be recognized for their creativity and talent, and for attendees to appreciate the diverse perspectives captured in the photographs.

Silva’s passion for photography is evident in his work, and his success in the contest underscores the importance of connecting with nature and celebrating the agricultural roots that sustain communities.

“The Beauty in Planting” serves as a reminder of the joy and fulfillment that comes from nurturing the land, a message that resonates with both the agricultural community and the broader public.

As the Illinois State Fair continues, Silva’s photograph will remain on display, inspiring others to appreciate the beauty that can be found in everyday moments of planting and growing.

His achievement not only highlights his talent but also shines a spotlight on the importance of agriculture in Illinois, making him a proud representative of his hometown of Plano.
