Chrishana Simon, a recent graduate in environmental studies from Illinois Wesleyan University, will soon begin a new chapter in Nepal. She is joining the Peace Corps to assist with agricultural development, women empowerment, and environmental stewardship. Originally from New Orleans, Simon is driven by her passion for purpose, travel, and community work.
The Peace Corps, a volunteer program by the U.S. government, aims to promote social and economic development abroad. Volunteers work closely with local communities to address their most urgent needs. Simon will contribute to the agricultural sector in Nepal, performing tasks such as beekeeping, farming, and community training.
Simon’s role includes working directly with women and young people. Her mission is to support their understanding of agriculture and sustainability, helping build stronger local food systems. She views this as a chance to grow both professionally and personally.
Although joining the Peace Corps was not part of her initial plan, Simon said the opportunity felt “entirely in alignment” with her goals. She hopes to pursue graduate studies in urban planning after completing her service, with a focus on environmental planning.
During her time at Illinois Wesleyan, Simon participated in many student groups such as the Black Student Union, Women of Color, and Student Senate. These experiences taught her the value of relationships, community, and resilience.
“This melting pot of experiences has given me an intimate understanding of community and relationships, as well as how I relate to and maneuver within connection. The relational skills that I cultivated and polished at IWU will be absolutely vital for being successful within my Peace Corps Assignment,” said Simon. “I’m excited to embark on this journey. It’s going to mean so much to me.”
Simon sees her Peace Corps service as a path toward meaningful change—both in the communities she will serve and within herself.
