The 55th Illinois Agriculture Legislative Day was held at the state Capitol, bringing together nearly 50 agricultural organizations, leaders, educators, and young advocates.
Organized by the Illinois Department of Agriculture, the event aimed to highlight the importance of agriculture, which is the backbone of the state’s economy.
Illinois remains a national leader in producing corn, soybeans, swine, and many specialty crops. The day included remarks from Governor J.B. Pritzker, Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton, and Director Costello, along with key lawmakers from the Senate and House Agriculture Committees.
Germán Bollero, dean of the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES), emphasized the significance of supporting agricultural policies and programs. “Illinois Agricultural Legislative Day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of agriculture, not just to Illinois’ economy, but to the health and well-being of our communities,” he stated.
Youth played a major role in the day’s events. Hundreds of participants from 4-H, FFA, and Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS) showcased the future of farming.
Illinois 4-H Youth Leadership Team Chair Janella Neary delivered an inspiring speech about her journey in agriculture and how the 4-H program impacts nearly 200,000 youth across the state.
Neary, a University of Illinois freshman, credited 4-H for her leadership growth. “I would not be the person I am today without 4-H,” she told lawmakers, encouraging continued support for youth programs.
Throughout the day, attendees met with legislators to discuss key agricultural priorities, such as preserving family farms, improving rural mental health, expanding ag education, and protecting farmland.
The University of Illinois Extension played a key role, showcasing its wide network and dedication to education, outreach, and sustainability efforts in all 102 counties.
