USDA opens applications for new crop marketing aid

USDA opens applications for new crop marketing aid

By Andi Anderson

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has launched the Marketing Assistance for Specialty Crops (MASC) program, providing $2 billion in support to specialty crop producers across the nation.

This initiative aims to assist producers in expanding their markets and managing increased costs associated with the production and distribution of specialty crops. Applications are now open from December 10, 2024, through January 8, 2025.

Specialty crops, including fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, nursery crops, and floriculture, are essential to the agriculture sector. These crops require specific conditions for handling and transport due to their perishability, which often results in higher production costs.

The MASC program addresses these challenges by providing financial assistance to cover expenses related to packaging, specialized handling, and quick market access, ensuring products reach consumers in optimal condition.

Eligibility for the program requires producers to be actively engaged in the business and share in the risks associated with cultivating specialty crops intended for sale in 2025. Both established producers and newcomers to the industry can apply, with specific documentation required to demonstrate past or expected sales.

For established producers, payment calculations will be based on verified sales from either 2023 or 2024, while new producers will have their payments calculated based on expected sales for 2025.

The USDA aims to issue payments promptly after the application period ends. However, if the demand exceeds the available funding, payments may be prorated, and the payment cap of $125,000 could be adjusted.

The USDA encourages all eligible specialty crop producers to take advantage of this program. Detailed information, including eligibility criteria, required documentation, and application procedures, is available on the MASC program webpage.

This initiative not only supports producers financially but also aims to enhance the competitiveness of U.S. specialty crops globally.

Producers interested in the MASC program should contact their local FSA office or visit the USDA website for more information and to access the necessary forms. This strategic funding is part of the USDA's broader effort to support the agricultural sector and ensure the sustainability and growth of specialty crop production in the United States.
