The 45Z Clean Fuel Production Tax Credit is moving closer to implementation, creating new opportunities for the ethanol industry and raising important questions for Illinois corn farmers. While the credit is designed to support cleaner fuel production, farmers can play a key role in helping ethanol qualify for higher credit values.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released its final Feedstock Carbon Intensity (FD-CI) Calculator. This tool will be used to calculate field-level carbon intensity (CI) scores for corn production. These scores are important because they help determine the overall carbon intensity of ethanol produced from corn.
A lower carbon intensity score can improve the environmental profile of ethanol and may increase its eligibility for a higher 45Z tax credit. Although the credit is intended for ethanol producers rather than farmers, farming practices can directly influence the carbon intensity calculations used in the program.
The financial benefits of the credit will go to ethanol plants. However, individual ethanol producers will decide how any value generated through the program is shared with participating farmers. As a result, communication between farmers and ethanol facilities will be an important part of the process moving forward.
The FD-CI Calculator evaluates several factors related to crop production. These include actual crop yield, nitrogen application rates, nitrogen-use efficiency, use of nitrogen inhibitors, tillage methods, grazed cover crops, manure management practices, soil testing results, grain transportation considerations, and the major land resource area where the corn is grown.
Farmers who maintain accurate production records may be better positioned to participate in future opportunities connected to the 45Z program. Detailed documentation of field activities, fertilizer applications, yields, and conservation practices can help demonstrate farming performance and support carbon intensity calculations.
Experts also encourage growers to stay current with soil testing programs and consider practices that improve efficiency and soil health. Strategies such as optimizing fertilizer use, adopting conservation practices, and improving farm management may contribute to lower carbon intensity scores.
As the 45Z Clean Fuel Production Tax Credit moves toward implementation, Illinois corn farmers are encouraged to stay informed, keep thorough records, and discuss program plans with their local ethanol plants. Taking these steps now may help them benefit from future opportunities linked to cleaner fuel production and sustainable agriculture.
