Swine Herd Free of TGEV Since 2021

Swine Herd Free of TGEV Since 2021

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. swine industry has reached an encouraging milestone: four years without a single positive case of transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV).

According to the Swine Disease Reporting System, the last confirmed case was reported in Iowa on March 22, 2021.

TGEV is a highly contagious disease that affects pigs of all ages, causing severe diarrhea and vomiting. The virus belongs to the Coronaviridae family and is especially deadly to piglets under two weeks old, often leading to high mortality rates. Older pigs generally show milder symptoms and lower fatality rates.

Since 2021, over 500,000 PCR tests have been conducted on pigs from all age groups and farm types across 47 states. These tests were processed by six leading veterinary diagnostic laboratories, all contributing to a comprehensive surveillance network.

The Swine Disease Reporting System monitors and aggregates swine enteric coronavirus data, including TGEV, ensuring early detection and control.

The consistent absence of TGEV cases suggests that biosecurity protocols and early intervention efforts in the pork industry are working effectively.

Maintaining a disease-free status is crucial for the U.S. pork sector, both for animal health and international trade. Continued testing and vigilance remain essential to preventing the virus’s return.
