The Du Quoin State Fairgrounds, in partnership with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), is offering a Free Kids’ Fishing Day on Tuesday, July 8 at 9 a.m.
This fun-filled event aims to introduce children to the joys of fishing while enjoying the outdoors.
Fishing poles, bait, and basic fishing instruction will be provided by IDNR staff. The event is free and open to the first 25 kids who register in advance. Children under 16 do not need a fishing license, while those aged 16 and older must have one to participate.
Licenses can be purchased for $15 or obtained free for those who are blind, disabled, or active military.
Jerry Costello II, Director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture, emphasized the value of this initiative. “Fishing is a great sport that exposes kids to nature while teaching them patience and persistence,” he said. “Events like this encourage families to explore all that the fairgrounds offer beyond the fair season.”
On the event day, participants will meet at 9 a.m. in front of Expo Hall. Attendees are encouraged to bring sunscreen, bug spray, water, and a chair for comfort.
To register, call (618) 542-1511 during business hours, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The office is closed on holidays.
Alongside the fishing day, the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds provides other free summer activities such as sidewalk chalk Fridays, scenic nature trails for walking or biking, and picnic areas. Families are invited to enjoy the fairgrounds all summer long.
