School is out and summer is in full swing at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds, where families are invited to enjoy a variety of free outdoor activities. Covering 750 scenic acres, the fairgrounds offer something for everyone looking to relax or explore the outdoors.
Every Friday in June, join “Chalk the ‘Phalt,” a colorful sidewalk chalk event where kids and adults can turn asphalt into art. Bring your creativity and your own chalk — no paint or markers allowed — and help make Fridays the most vibrant day of the week.
Nature lovers can explore the scenic Nature Trail, now enhanced with new signs marking natural areas. Along the trail, visitors will discover spaces planted with native pollinator species, designed to support bees, butterflies, birds, and even bats.
Families and friends can enjoy a bike ride through miles of paved roads that feature gentle hills and beautiful views. It’s a safe and peaceful way to spend time together and stay active.
Fishing enthusiasts aged 16 and up (with a valid Illinois fishing license) can take advantage of the lakes and water bodies on the grounds. It’s a great way to enjoy a quiet summer day and connect with nature.
For a more laid-back outing, the fairgrounds also offer great spots for a lakeside picnic. Spread a blanket on the grass or grab a picnic table and enjoy food with a view. Larger groups can rent a pavilion for just $60.
The Du Quoin State Fairgrounds is the perfect destination for free, family-friendly summer fun. From hands-on art to outdoor relaxation, there’s something for everyone to enjoy all season long.
