The Illinois Soybean Association (ISA) mentorship program in 2025 was a game-changer in shaping my perspective on agricultural careers. Before participating, I had a general interest in agriculture, but I wasn’t sure which career path to pursue.
Through this program, I gained invaluable exposure to various agriculture-related businesses and learned about the many career options beyond the traditional roles often highlighted.
Although I could not attend all five site visits due to personal reasons, the three I participated in were unforgettable experiences. These visits provided insight into the diverse opportunities available in the agriculture industry.
I am deeply grateful to Colleen Callahan of Colleen Callahan Consultancy for organizing these visits, which have had a lasting impact on my career outlook.
One of the highlights of the program was our visit to the USDA, where we focused on the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). I had the chance to learn about their efforts in supporting farmers to improve land productivity while maintaining its natural state.
We gained firsthand knowledge on sustainable land management practices, including erosion prevention and land preservation. Visiting a farmer’s home to see these NRCS programs in action was eye-opening, and it was one of the most impactful moments of the experience.
Thanks to the ISA mentorship program, I now have a clearer understanding of my passion for sustainable farming and natural resource management.
I’m excited about the future and eager to explore the career opportunities that align with my newfound goals. This experience has provided me with direction and purpose, and I’m looking forward to what lies ahead.
