Northern Illinois University President Lisa Freeman has been selected to represent the state in Governor JB Pritzker’s trade mission to Mexico. This important visit is aimed at strengthening economic relationships between Illinois and Mexico.
The trade mission includes members from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA), and Intersect Illinois, along with public and private sector leaders.
The goal is to enhance collaboration in key sectors such as agriculture, food processing, finance, and manufacturing.
Mexico is a key trade partner for Illinois. It is the state’s second-largest export market and third-largest import market. In 2024 alone, Illinois exported $1.56 billion worth of agricultural products to Mexico. Imports from Mexico include beverages, electronics, and transportation equipment, totalling over $19 billion.
The timing of this trade mission is crucial as previous tariffs had caused uncertainty in the U.S.-Mexico trade relationship. This visit shows Illinois’ commitment to strengthening ties and expanding trade opportunities.
The delegation includes several notable leaders such as Governor Pritzker, Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton, and heads of key trade and agriculture departments. Business and education leaders like Freeman are expected to bring valuable insight to discussions with Mexican partners.
Other delegates include executives from the Illinois Corn Growers Association, Illinois Soybean Association, and Illinois Beef Association. Their presence highlights the importance of agricultural exports in the state’s economy.
This mission also includes representatives from higher education, energy, manufacturing, and local government. Their collaboration reflects a unified approach to boosting economic development and building stronger international partnerships.
By participating in this mission, Lisa Freeman will help represent Illinois’ educational and agricultural strengths, supporting both student opportunities and the state’s farming community.
The trip is expected to support jobs, trade, and cooperation between Illinois and one of its closest trading partners, Mexico.
