Illinois soybean farmers have set a remarkable new production record in 2024, reaffirming their leadership in agriculture.
According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) of the USDA, Illinois farmers produced an impressive 688 million bushels of soybeans, surpassing the previous record of 666.75 million bushels set in 2018.
This milestone was achieved through a combination of increased yields and expanded harvested acreage. The statewide average yield rose slightly to 64 bushels per acre, compared to 63 bushels per acre in 2023. In addition, farmers harvested 10.75 million acres of soybeans in 2024, up from 10.3 million acres the previous year.
Ron Kindred, Chairman of the Illinois Soybean Association (ISA), expressed pride in the farmers' achievements, stating, "Illinois farmers have demonstrated resilience and excellence, overcoming challenges like low prices and difficult weather. Our investments in research and policy support have unlocked soybean yield potential and ensured our continued leadership in the U.S."
Soybeans play a vital role in Illinois' agricultural economy, serving as a key export and an innovation driver. This record-breaking harvest not only strengthens Illinois’ reputation but also highlights the commitment of its farmers to excellence.
Bryan Severs, Chairman of ISA’s Soybean Production Committee, lauded the accomplishment, saying, "The 2024 harvest sets a new standard for soybean farming, showcasing Illinois farmers' hard work and determination."
Illinois remains a leader in soybean production, consistently ranked as a top-producing state. This achievement underscores the importance of continued innovation, research, and support for farmers.
