University of Illinois Extension is encouraging people to enjoy summer gardening while learning new skills through its Four Seasons Gardening webinar series.
These free online sessions are designed to help individuals improve their gardening knowledge and make better use of their outdoor spaces.
The summer series includes two sessions scheduled for June 9 and July 28. Each webinar focuses on an important topic related to home gardening, environmental care, and backyard food production. Sessions are conducted live online at 1:30 p.m. on selected Tuesdays, and participants must register in advance.
The first webinar, titled Moth Gardening: Amazing Pollinators of the Night, will be held on June 9. This session highlights the importance of moths, which are often overlooked compared to butterflies. Participants will learn about moth identification, their life cycle, and effective methods to attract them to gardens. The session aims to raise awareness about the role of nighttime pollinators in maintaining a healthy ecosystem.
The second webinar, The Real Steps to Maintaining a Lawn, will take place on July 28. This session focuses on practical and research-based lawn care techniques. It addresses common questions such as how often lawns should be fertilized and whether daily watering is beneficial. The discussion simplifies complex information and helps participants understand which steps are essential and which are optional.
Extension educators Nancy Kuhajda and Chris Enroth will lead both sessions. They will share useful tips, provide step-by-step guidance, and answer questions from participants. Their goal is to help individuals choose lawn care practices that match their needs, budget, and time availability.
These webinars are designed to make learning easy and accessible. For those who cannot attend live sessions, recordings will be available on the Illinois Extension Horticulture YouTube channel about two weeks later.
