Yellow Soybeans Raise Concerns For Farmers Across Southern Illinois

Farmers across southern Illinois are reporting an unusual increase in yellow soybean plants during the 2026 growing season. While yellow patches in soybean fields are not uncommon, experts note that the issue has become much more widespread this year, prompting growers to investigate the causes and potential solutions.

The most common symptom observed is similar to potassium (K) deficiency. In affected plants, yellowing often begins along the tips and edges of newer leaves. However, farmers are encouraged to scout fields carefully because several diseases and nutrient deficiencies can produce similar symptoms. Conditions such as Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) may also be present in some locations, making accurate diagnosis essential before any management decisions are made.

Many agronomists believe that prolonged dry weather has played a major role in the problem. Over the past 12 to 18 months, much of southern Illinois has received below-average rainfall. Even though last year's drought has passed, soil conditions in many areas have not fully recovered.

Dry conditions can reduce potassium availability by causing the nutrient to become more tightly bound within soil particles. As a result, soybean plants may show signs of potassium deficiency even in fields where soil test levels previously appeared adequate. This has created unexpected nutrient stress in many soybean fields.

In addition to potassium deficiency, several other factors may be contributing to plant yellowing. Agronomists have identified soil compaction, crop residue differences, soybean cyst nematodes, Dectes stem borer infestations, and pod and stem blight as possible stressors. Fertilizer application patterns, including spreader width and variable-rate application zones, may also influence the streaking patterns seen across some fields.

When multiple stresses occur at the same time, soybean plants can experience more severe symptoms, leading to larger areas of yellowing and reduced crop vigor.

Experts recommend soil testing, nematode sampling, and thorough field scouting to determine the exact cause of the problem. Some growers are also exploring foliar potassium products, such as potassium acetate, as a possible management tool. Research suggests that foliar potassium applications may provide benefits through the R4 growth stage, although results vary depending on field conditions and the severity of the deficiency.

Looking ahead, adequate rainfall will be important for restoring soil moisture and improving potassium availability. The situation also highlights the importance of maintaining a strong fertility program through regular soil testing and balanced nutrient applications. Understanding the causes of yellow soybeans today can help farmers make better management decisions and support stronger crop performance in future growing seasons.
