Illinois AgrAbility is a program aimed at helping farmers, veterans, and farmworkers who have disabilities or chronic illnesses that hinder their ability to work in agriculture. With over 72,650 farms in Illinois, farming is not just a job but a way of life for many. The program offers education, assistance, and resources to eliminate barriers and accommodate limitations, allowing individuals to continue farming.
Farmers with disabilities face unique challenges, but with support, they can still contribute to their livelihoods and rural communities. AgrAbility identifies farmers with disabilities, conducts farm assessments, recommends assistive technology, provides educational opportunities, and offers referrals to other service providers.
Supported by a federal grant, Illinois AgrAbility has been serving residents for more than 30 years. Through a collaborative effort with Extension educators, disability experts, and volunteers, the program offers free personalized services. Over 1,500 farmers have already received assistance.
Illinois AgrAbility works closely with the Illinois Assistive Technology Program and Community Health Partnership of Illinois to provide comprehensive support. Farmers in need can visit the program's website to access their services. Illinois AgrAbility is committed to empowering farmers with disabilities and ensuring they can continue their vital contributions to the state's agriculture industry.
