CDA REU Fuels AgTech Passion

CDA REU Fuels AgTech Passion

By Andi Anderson

Each summer, the Center for Digital Agriculture (CDA) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign hosts students from across the nation for its Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. Now in its fifth year, the initiative has welcomed 62 students to date, including 14 participants in 2025.

The program gives undergraduates research opportunities they may not find at their home institutions, connecting them with expert faculty mentors. Participants work on real-world projects that advance agricultural production and sustainability, gaining valuable technical and professional skills.

The experience also includes training in scientific writing, communication, and research ethics. Students present their findings in Science Slam sessions and poster presentations, with some continuing work toward conferences or journal publications.

This year’s students tackled diverse projects. De’Janique Lambeth from Langston University developed a computer vision model to monitor pregnant pigs for early signs of respiratory distress, working under mentors in agricultural engineering and animal sciences.

Cole Wycislak, a recent community college graduate transferring to Illinois, researched a genetic trait in corn that reduces leaf area, guided by mentors in crop sciences.

Dimitry Ermakov from Hillsdale College applied machine learning to agriculture, enhancing large language model performance with a Retrieval Augmented Generation approach in collaboration with computer science mentors.

Students praised the program for expanding their skills, exposing them to new career possibilities, and building confidence in pursuing advanced studies or industry roles.

The paid internship also provides housing, meals, and networking opportunities, making it a comprehensive professional development experience.

Applications for the 2026 CDA REU cohort will open in November, offering another chance for students interested in agricultural technology to join this impactful program and help shape the future of digital agriculture.
