Food Aid Program Loses Funding

Food Aid Program Loses Funding

By Andi Anderson

Recent changes in federal funding have halted reimbursements for key agricultural and food assistance programs, affecting farmers and food distribution efforts. The Local Food Purchase Assistance Program (LFPA) and the Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure Program (RFSI) are now on hold due to missing reimbursements, creating uncertainty for farmers and food banks.

LFPA supports initiatives like Illinois-EATS, which purchases fresh produce from farmers at fair market prices and supplies it to communities through food pantries. The program has engaged over 170 farmers and supplied fresh food to nearly 900 locations. Many of these farmers belong to socially disadvantaged groups, including new farmers. However, the state has yet to receive $17.8 million in expected funding.

“That program made the difference, and I would say to Elon Musk and President Trump, this is saving lives. This is teaching our babies how to eat fresh vegetables and how it helps their medical conditions,” said Brenda Stewart, a farmer in Kankakee County.

Similarly, RFSI, designed to enhance food processing and distribution infrastructure, has also been affected. The program, which was in the process of awarding grants, is still awaiting $6.5 million in federal funding. State officials reported that reimbursement claims submitted after January were rejected without explanation.

The funding disruption follows a broader issue, as Illinois officials recently questioned why nearly $1.9 billion in federal funds promised to state agencies, businesses, and nonprofits had been withheld. A federal judge has since ruled against blocking fund distribution.

The funding freeze comes at a challenging time for farmers already dealing with trade uncertainties. New tariffs on major agricultural exports and retaliatory measures from trading partners are increasing financial pressure. The Illinois Farm Bureau has warned that restricted market access and rising costs could further strain the agricultural sector.

Farmers and officials are seeking clarity on the withheld funds, emphasizing the need for continued support to maintain food security and economic stability.
