Bruce Gehrke Earns Prestigious FFA American Degree

By Andi Anderson

Bruce Gehrke, a 2024 graduate of Byron High School, has earned the prestigious FFA American Degree, the highest honor awarded by the Future Farmers of America (FFA) Organization. He is one of only six graduates from Byron High School to achieve this distinction.

The FFA American Degree recognizes outstanding students who have excelled in agricultural education, leadership, and community involvement. To qualify, students must complete a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) program, earn and save income through agriculture-related projects, and demonstrate strong leadership in FFA activities.

Bruce’s SAE project focused on diversified livestock, including cattle, swine, and poultry, with additional work in forestry and vegetable farming.

Byron High School agriculture teacher Eric Tryggestad praised Bruce’s dedication and hard work, stating that the award reflects his commitment to agriculture and education. Bruce will formally receive his FFA American Degree at the 2025 National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, next October.

Bruce has already been recognized for his agricultural excellence, previously earning a finalist spot for Illinois’ FFA Star Farmer Award, which honors students demonstrating exceptional leadership and commitment to sustainable farming practices.

Earning the FFA American Degree is a significant milestone for any FFA member, highlighting years of dedication and achievement. Congratulations to Bruce on this well-deserved recognition!
