The Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA) has named the Phil and Karen Borgic family of Raymond, Illinois, as the 2025 Illinois Pork Family of the Year. This recognition highlights their decades-long dedication to pork farming, leadership, and industry advocacy.
The Borgic family’s journey in the pork industry began in 1952 when Phil Borgic’s parents established a diversified farm. Over time, Phil and Karen expanded Borgic Farms into a leading operation, focusing on farrow-to-wean production.
Today, the farm includes two sow farms, two wean-to-market farms, and over 50 grower partners across Illinois, marketing 450,000 pigs annually.
Phil, a University of Illinois graduate in Agricultural Economics, has played a key role in advancing pork farming. He served on the IPPA Board for over 15 years, including two terms as president, and was also a director on the National Pork Producers Council.
Karen has actively supported industry events, fundraisers, and pork education initiatives. Their efforts were recently highlighted in a U.S. pork export standards video.
Education and outreach have been central to the Borgics’ mission. The family has hosted over 40 farm tours, helping consumers understand modern pork production. “I am proud of the pork industry and the family we have built,” says Phil Borgic.
Their commitment extends to their team members, with farm manager Joshua Matli praising Phil as a mentor and role model.
The next generation continues this legacy. Their son, Mike, has worked with IPPA for 17 years and will soon join the family business. Kevin, a leadership coach and catering director, remains involved in industry development. Their daughter, Michelle, a registered nurse, provides CPR training for the farm’s employees.
The Borgic family’s dedication to farming, education, and community service reflects their deep-rooted passion for agriculture, ensuring a strong future for pork production in Illinois.
