AI and ag power Illinois growth vision

AI and ag power Illinois growth vision

By Andi Anderson

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker recently revealed a comprehensive five-year growth plan aimed at boosting key sectors such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, next-generation agriculture, and business climate improvements.

This ambitious plan, developed by the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, emphasizes equitable growth and the development of a new clean energy economy.

The detailed plan is available on the DCEO’s official website, outlining steps to promote sustainable economic development in Illinois.

In addition to the growth plan, Gov. Pritzker signed Senate Bill 3514, officially designating the “giant puffball” (Calvatia gigantea) as Illinois' state mushroom.

The initiative to recognize this unique fungus was driven by elementary students from Prairie School of DuPage in Wheaton, who championed the bill through the legislative process. The governor praised the students for their curiosity and dedication, highlighting the giant puffball as a symbol of their achievement.

Several new laws concerning artificial intelligence were enacted, set to take effect on January 1, 2026. Among these, one law protects employees from discrimination arising from the use of AI in the workplace, while another safeguards performers from unauthorized AI-generated reproductions.

The state's child pornography laws have been clarified to include AI-generated images and videos, ensuring robust protection against the misuse of this technology.

These legislative efforts reflect Illinois' commitment to fostering innovation while protecting its citizens, marking a significant step forward for the state in both technological and social arenas.
