The Illinois Cooperative Agriculture Pest Survey (CAPS) has identified pockets of insect pressure across the state, according to the preliminary findings shared by survey coordinator Kelly Estes.
This summer, Estes and her team of students conducted extensive sampling in random fields throughout Illinois, focusing on a variety of insects, particularly the western corn rootworm.
The results indicate that while some areas remain relatively unaffected, there are notable regions where insect pressure is higher, posing a potential threat to crop yields.
“Overall, I think the trend again with western corn rootworms is consistent with what we've seen in previous years,” said Estes, highlighting the persistence of this pest in certain areas. The western corn rootworm is known for its destructive impact on corn crops, making it a key focus of the survey.
The CAPS team is continuing its work throughout the summer, gathering data that will help inform farmers and agricultural professionals about the current pest landscape in Illinois.
By identifying areas of concern, the survey aims to provide valuable insights that can guide pest management strategies and protect crop health.
In addition to the western corn rootworm, the survey is monitoring other pests that may pose a threat to Illinois agriculture.
The findings will be compiled into a comprehensive report later in the year, offering a detailed overview of pest activity and helping to shape future agricultural practices in the state.
Estes emphasized the importance of ongoing surveillance and the role that such surveys play in supporting the agricultural community. “This kind of information is crucial for helping farmers make informed decisions about pest control and crop management,” she said.
As the summer progresses, the CAPS team will continue to monitor fields, ensuring that any emerging threats are quickly identified and addressed. The final report will provide a clearer picture of the pest pressures facing Illinois farmers and offer recommendations for mitigating their impact.
The survey's findings underscore the importance of vigilance in pest management and the need for continued research to support sustainable agriculture in Illinois.
