Across the U.S., farmers and ranchers begin their work long before most people wake up. Their efforts provide food, fiber, and energy—basic needs for every American. This daily work also supports the broader economy and millions of jobs.
The 2024 Feeding the Economy report reveals that agriculture now impacts over one-third of the U.S. economy, totaling $9.5 trillion. Although only 2% of Americans are farmers, their work supports an entire supply chain, including research, transport, and retail. If agriculture were a nation, its economy would rank third in the world.
Jobs are a key benefit of this system. In 2024 alone, the agriculture supply chain created over 1 million new jobs. Today, it provides 24 million direct jobs and supports more than 47 million overall.
However, farming is not without challenges. Inflation, higher labor costs, and a dated farm bill make operations harder. Many farmers operate with very little profit. Farm bankruptcies rose sharply—by 55%—in just one year. Over 141,000 farms shut down between 2017 and 2022.
The Farm Bureau is stepping up efforts to support agriculture. By working with lawmakers and federal agencies, they are pushing for better policies and tools to help farmers succeed.
America depends on its farmers every day. With strong support and smart planning, agriculture can continue to fuel both our food systems and our economic future.
