Ag Policy Talks - Climate and Farmers

By Andi Anderson

A member of the Senate Agriculture Committee recently met with the nominee for Secretary of Agriculture to discuss key agricultural and nutrition priorities. The conversation focused on addressing challenges and supporting agricultural stakeholders ahead of the nominee’s hearing scheduled for later this week.

During the meeting, the senator highlighted the significance of maintaining a robust nutrition safety net to assist families in affording groceries. Additionally, the discussion underscored the importance of protecting the immigrant workforce vital to farms, including those in pork, apple, and dairy production.

Other topics included safeguarding farm safety-net programs like crop insurance and upholding biofuels policies such as the Renewable Fuels Standard. These measures are seen as critical for supporting farmers and promoting clean energy. The role of the Department of Agriculture in managing extreme weather events, including dust storms and climate change, was also emphasized as a pressing issue.

The senator expressed optimism about the conversation, noting that it provided valuable insight into the nominee’s priorities. “I had a sensible conversation with President Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke Rollins today,” said Durbin.“I look forward to learning more from her in her upcoming nomination hearing.”

The meeting highlighted shared goals for strengthening agricultural systems and addressing the challenges facing farmers and rural communities.
