USDA disaster designation offers aid for Illinois tornado losses

USDA disaster designation offers aid for Illinois tornado losses

By Andi Anderson

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued a disaster designation for three Illinois counties, providing vital support to farmers impacted by devastating tornadoes that swept through the area earlier this year.

USDA Secretary Thomas J. Vilsack announced the designation, which includes Marshall and Putnam counties, affected on July 14-15, 2024, and Henry County, which experienced the storms on July 15.

This declaration allows farmers in these regions to access emergency assistance, aiming to help them recover from significant agricultural and financial losses caused by the storms.

Farmers in surrounding counties are also eligible for assistance. These contiguous counties include Bureau, Knox, LaSalle, Mercer, Peoria, Rock Island, Stark, Whiteside, and Woodford.

The USDA designation extends to producers in these areas, recognizing that the effects of the tornadoes likely impacted nearby communities as well.

Through this disaster designation, the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) will offer emergency loans to eligible farmers working to rebuild and recover from the storms’ damage.

Farmers in the designated and contiguous counties have an eight-month window from the date of the designation to apply for these loans. These funds can support them in covering essential recovery costs, rebuilding damaged infrastructure, and preparing for future planting seasons.

Jerry Costello II, Director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture, expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts among government agencies to support affected farmers. He highlighted the commitment of both Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Secretary Vilsack in swiftly bringing resources to rural communities in need.

Farmers interested in applying for emergency loans are encouraged to reach out to their local USDA Service Centers. These centers can provide information on eligibility requirements, guide producers through the application process, and offer support for filing a Notice of Loss.

This assistance ensures that those impacted by natural disasters have a pathway toward financial recovery and continued agricultural production.

The USDA’s disaster designation underscores a commitment to supporting farmers facing unexpected hardships, ensuring they receive the necessary assistance to overcome natural disasters and rebuild their livelihoods.
