U.S. Dairy Exports Surge to $8.2 Billion in 2024

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. dairy industry achieved its second-highest export total in history, hitting $8.2 billion in 2024. This marks a $223 million increase from the previous year, demonstrating strong global demand for US dairy products, according to USDA data.

Mexico and Canada remained the largest buyers, importing record amounts of U.S. dairy at $2.47 billion and $1.14 billion, respectively. Central American nations also increased their imports, while exports to China fell to their lowest levels since 2020.

Industry leaders see opportunities ahead. Michael Dykes, president and CEO of IDFA, noted, "Our industry is poised to become the world’s leading supplier of dairy products thanks to the resilience and innovation of the American dairy industry." He emphasized the need for stronger trade agreements to unlock new markets.

Challenges persist, particularly with Canada’s enforcement of USMCA trade provisions, which limit American dairy exports. Slower demand in Asia, especially in China, Vietnam, and the Philippines, also poses concerns. Industry experts stress the importance of trade policies that increase market access and level the playing field.

With over 3.2 million jobs supported and nearly $800 billion in economic contributions, US dairy continues to invest in processing infrastructure to expand global sales.

Exports currently account for 18% of U.S. milk production, making international markets crucial for future growth.
