Illinois students have a unique opportunity to display their creativity through photography with the 2025 Cream of the Crop Photo Contest. Organized by Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs, this contest allows young photographers to highlight the beauty and importance of agriculture in the state.
Students aged 8 to 18 can participate in three categories: ages 8-10, 11-14, and 15-18. Each student may submit up to two photos that capture their vision of Illinois agriculture. The deadline for submissions is June 13, 2025.
Winning students will receive Bright Start scholarships of $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $250 for third place in each age group. The contest aims to encourage young photographers to explore and appreciate Illinois' farming heritage.
"The contest is a great opportunity for students to showcase their creativity while highlighting Illinois' strong agricultural industry," said Treasurer Frerichs. "Our skilled farmers, rich farmland, and diverse agricultural products make Illinois a leader in farming."
Now in its 13th year, the contest has seen over 750 students participate since its launch in 2013, with more than 1,400 photos submitted. Winning photos will be featured in Ag Invest marketing materials, the 2025 Cream of the Crop calendar, and displayed at the Illinois State Fair.
The contest is part of the Ag Invest program, one of the nation's largest agricultural linked deposit programs. Ag Invest supports Illinois farmers and agriculture professionals by offering low-interest loans for farm operations, equipment, and livestock purchases.
Students can submit their photos electronically at the website. For rules and guidelines, visit the website or contact Teri Whitfield at 217.900.0075.
