Illinois Community Garden Opens Applications for 2025 Growing Season

Illinois Community Garden Opens Applications for 2025 Growing Season

By Andi Anderson

The Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) is seeking applicants for its 2025 Community Garden season, providing individuals and families with the opportunity to grow fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers in a shared gardening space.

Located on the Illinois State Fair Grandstand racetrack infield, the Community Garden features 200 plots, with 100 designated for organic gardening and the rest for non-organic use. This initiative helps those with limited yard space to grow their own food at an affordable cost.

According to IDOA Director Jerry Costello II, this program offers an accessible solution for urban gardeners. Each plot costs $20, with an optional tilling service available for an additional charge. The Department provides free water and compost to all gardeners.

Those interested in reserving a plot can apply online at agr.illinois.gov/consumers/communitygarden.html. Completed applications and payments can be submitted by mail or in person at the IDOA’s John R. Block Building in Springfield.

Returning gardeners must reserve their previous plot by June 1 to keep their space. The Community Garden will open on March 8, weather permitting.

New for 2025, IDOA will host a Pumpkin Weigh-Off at the Illinois Product Fall Market on October 11. Categories include Open, Youth (up to 14 years old), and FFA/4H members, with prizes awarded in each division.

For more information, visit the IDOA website or contact the Department at (217) 785-8300.
