The Tri-State Forest Stewardship Conference has been a key event for forest landowners in Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin for over 25 years. Recognized as one of the largest forestry conferences in the Midwest, it provides valuable insights and resources to those managing forested land.
This year, the conference is scheduled for March 1 at the Grand River Center in Dubuque, Iowa. Hosted by the Extension Services of Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois, the event will feature Lara Noldner from the University of Iowa as the keynote speaker. She will discuss the importance of protecting cultural and archaeological sites within forests.
A new addition to this year’s event is the Basics of Forestry track, designed for new landowners or those seeking a refresher on forest management. This track will include sessions on tree identification, working with professional foresters, understanding forested land, and developing effective management plans. Other key topics covered in the conference will include controlling invasive species, wildlife management, chainsaw safety, forest health, proper pruning techniques, and strategies for generational land transfers. The day will conclude with forestry experts from each state sharing updates on programs, cost-sharing options, and new initiatives for landowners.
Though the conference primarily serves landowners in the Midwest, forestry professionals, consultants, conservation volunteers, Master Naturalists, and students are encouraged to attend. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with check-in open from 8 to 9 a.m.
Attendees must preregister to secure their spot and meal. The registration fee, including lunch, is $55 if completed by February 21, increasing to $65 afterward. Those interested can register online at go.illinois.edu/TriStateForestry or contact the Jo Daviess County Extension Office at (815) 858-2273.
The University of Illinois Extension supports communities through education and outreach in various fields, including forestry, agriculture, environmental conservation, and workforce development. For additional information or accommodations, contact the Jo Daviess County Extension Office.
