Summer twilight series lights up southern Illinois farming

By Andi Anderson

The University of Illinois Extension is proud to announce the Southern Illinois Summer Twilight Series, a set of educational gatherings designed to showcase the diverse agricultural practices within the region. These events, spanning May to August, are set to occur monthly on Monday evenings.

The series begins on May 13 at Legacy Meats LLC, where participants will delve into high-quality cattle and hog production alongside custom processing techniques. Each session promises a different focus, with June's meeting at McLane Farms highlighting largemouth bass farming and diverse row crops including rice. July will feature cut flower farming and farm market strategies at Blessed Blooms, and the series will conclude in August at Sunnybrook Gardens with an intensive look at vegetable production and the processing of sweet corn and peaches.

Each event, running from 6 to 8 p.m., is designed to provide attendees with a practical understanding of various farming and marketing practices. These twilight meetings are not only educational but also provide a networking platform for those interested in agricultural innovations and community building within the farming sector.

Attendees will have the opportunity to engage directly with farmers and extension educators, asking questions and gaining insights that can be applied to their own agricultural practices or interests. This series is ideal for local farmers, agricultural students, and anyone interested in the behind-the-scenes workings of diverse farming operations.
